Most tattoos that age badly were healed badly. The rules are simple and they matter.
That is genuinely most of it. Wash it gently twice a day with unscented soap, pat it dry, and put on a thin layer of unscented lotion. Thin, not thick. It needs air.
It will flake like a light sunburn around day four to seven. That is normal. Do not pick at it, because picking is what pulls ink out and leaves patchy spots.
No pools, baths, hot tubs, or long soaks for about two weeks. Showers are completely fine. Sun is the long term enemy, so once it is healed, wear sunscreen on it forever.
Some redness and a little weeping is normal. Wash gently, keep it lightly moisturised.
It flakes and itches. Do not scratch and do not pick. This is the part people ruin.
Mostly healed on the surface. Sunscreen from here on, every time it sees daylight.
